fear of the fire or the frying pan

last night and this morning have been very telling for me. very, very telling.

as usual, the backstory helps. my wife went away for monday and tuesday nights (and wednesday day also) for training in her work so i was left alone with the dogs and the townhouse. this seemed like a really great thing, full of promise and peace and quiet.

in fact, i used the two days for just that, spending the entire time at home, watching tv or playing my guitar or working on art on my computer. granted, i did work during the days but the nights were mine. all the things that i wanted to do, i did. might seem lame to some but going to bed at 9:30 (i get up at 5am everyday for work) and not having the tv going until 11 was just about heaven.

last night, my wife came back. i will freely admit to missing her as i always do. i do love her still.

as soon as she got out of the car, it started again. a running commentary of my failures. pointing out that i didn't do all the dishes or enough laundry (the last time she was home for a few days she turned the house into a shit pile). commentary on things supposed like i didn't walk the dogs enough. it's already 10pm and i now have shoulders as tight as piano wire.

we head upstairs to bed with her complaints of how tired she is and that i just can't know how tiring it is to sit through that training (i'm in training all the time and teach it sometimes) for three days and then have to drive home afterwards some 3 hours away (ironically, i am always the one driving on trips and visits to friends and such and she is sleeps most of it).

in bed, ready to go to sleep and the tv goes on. i cannot sleep with the tv on. my mind follows the dialog and the constantly changing light glows through my eyelids like a mistimed strobe. oh, and she keeps the thing up loud. this goes on for an hour at least.

this morning, i am up at 5 and dressed and ready but twenty of the hour. i head downstairs feeling very strange. i have the stress sleep headache, my shoulders are aching and i am so tired it's painful.

i take my prilosec with a few ibuprofen and down the last of the gatorade in the fridge.

that's when i snapped.

i turned towards the cabinet and fire off a really hard punch into the door that rattled glasses and hurt like mad. another. another. right now it's a little hard to type since my fingers are sore and creaky.

i so hate my life right now. i am stuck in a place where i have no one to understand and help and, in fact, the person that means the most seems to go out of her way to use the things that hurt me and destroy me the most with a frightening regularity.

what do i choose? stay in the frying pan and keep burning or jump and fall into the flames below. it's not going to get better here amidst the grease and sizzle but i cannot see over the edge and that fear, that uncertainty and self doubt paralyze me, leave me gasping with anxiety. i know that i am good at fucking things up when left to do them on my own. bills, balance. i forget all sorts of things, have no confidence.

shall i continue to pretend that nothing is wrong, things will get better, keep the faith? look to the future, learn from the past, be a man? i can cry like one, that's for sure.

what i wouldn't give for an ass load of money to fall into my lap so i could say goodbye and hire someone to manage that stuff for me. then i could finally work on getting help that didn't always require careful and controlled options dictated by my insurance company. and my wife.

sadly, writing all this hasn't helped one bit. this is serious.

anxious for the dawn

i feel it, creeping down my spine. i can't sleep again because i can't stop my mind from it's wanderings, it's circular running round and round. the old hamster on the wheel of fears.

mainly they are pointless and obviously so yet despite all that i tell myself this, i cannot break it, cannot stop it, cannot sleep.

i am so tired this morning. so very tired.

a damn yo-yo

so here i am on the other side of this morning, hyped up and moving really fast, doing things, accomplishing tasks and generally being good at being. slight smile on my face, cools stuff going on around me, good tunes on my headphones.

the problem is that it will slew back the other direction once i get home. the dogs are there (they annoy the living shit out of me, by the way, but that's another posting). my wife will be there.

generally i wonder if that's the problem and maybe it doesn't help having things around me that drag me down but i don't think it's all of it. if i walked away, things really wouldn't change all that much, just be a different set of problems that crushed me under.

but in the meantime, i'll sit here, music playing, bobbing my head to the beat and feeling relatively all right.

so sad i can't think of a good title

i cried again in the shower this morning.

just a few soft tears, quiet moaning so my wife wouldn't hear. she doesn't get it and would do the same pointless lecturing she always does. pull my self up by my bootstraps. that sort of shit.

i am so crushed right now, so utterly sad and empty that it i couldn't even come up with an appropriate title for this post. i feel so tired that my face is about to slide of and fall in a wet heap on the floor.

i haven't slept well in days, tossing and turning each night, filled with anxiety and fear and sadness. every noise wakes me. it's too warm. my head hurts. each night is the same.

i wake in the morning with a headache and an instant surge of fear. this was followed by a slow and dull wave of unhappiness that kept building until, as i mentioned, i started crying in the shower. even now, typing about it in my cube at work, i can feel the tears threatening. i'm not out of it yet.

there is so much to be said for drinking oneself to sleep, i guess but for some reason i've not tried it. i just don't get off on drinking all that much really. used to smoke pot for a while back in my 20's but even that grew old.

this has got to break soon. i am really starting to slide deeper.

a cage without a key

That's the thing about depression: A human being can survive almost anything, as long as she sees the end in sight. But depression is so insidious, and it compounds daily, that it's impossible to ever see the end. The fog is like a cage without a key.
- Elizabeth Wurtzel

i did not have such a good night last night. one of the hardest of all things about depression is what it does to the people around you that mean the most to you. you want them to understand, to see how they affect you. you want them to understand that you have a terrible disease of the mind that does not go away, does not give up and will continually make your life hard.

it's amazing to consider that something so seemingly intangible can be such a huge weight, such an insurmountable thing that it would cause the bearer to choose death over living with it. people crash in a plane on a mountain, eat each other and live to tell the tale. they do it because help will come and they will survive. they know it, even if it amy not in the end prove true. at the time, there is hope of an end, salvation and release.

so you end up making choices, doing things that seem like the right idea or even choosing to bury your head in the proverbial sand and things go wrong, mistakes are made, lies are told, so many little problems that combine into bigger ones. and you try to forget them, to move on, to survive because to you each day is just another lucky break combined with the opportunity for more to go wrong. but those around you, those closest, they don't understand.

they remember all the mistakes, they remember all the problems and they remind you, sometimes they punish. i'm usually thought of as weak and useless and a problem or so I'm told on occasion.

last night was one of those nights. it came to a boil or a head or whatever clever turn of phrase that you want to apply. it usually does around bill time. the accusations started early on about how my mistakes caused us to have to pay out so much, how i should be more helpful, how i should be making more money, how i'm not focusing on our future. then came the talk of how it's my fault we don't have a house instead of the townhouse we now have, how we don't have a lot of retirement money saved up yet, my fault too, how our house is messy and i don't put enough into it and i'm not making enough money as i haven't finished my degree and i'm causing all sorts of stress with my poor attitude and my sudden fits of anger and how it just might be so much better if we were divorced and i could fuck my own life up alone and on and on and on.

once the immediate pain and tears clear up and i can lay there quietly in bed thinking while my significant other drifts off to sleep blissfully unaware of the massive hurricane of trauma going on next to her, i can begin to think again and the panic sets in once more, the fear of being alone and knowing that i can't handle it, that i am doomed, that it's all my fault, that i am so tired of failing, that i am desperate, that i am losing it, that i won't let her down again, this time i'll fight it off for good, everything is shit and it this is all i can expect for the rest of my life than what the fuck is the point in continuing except that i'm too much of a chickenshit to do it and then i think about the toruble i'd cause, the people i'd hurt and the guilt floods in even more and i finally fall asleep hours later.

she doesn't get it, she refuses and so i'm shit out of luck. i can't afford to leave, i can hardly typed it without panic and guilt spiking me through. besides, what if i'm wrong? what if i am the reason and everything is going to clear up if i just hang on a little longer?

the funny thing is that she doesn't realize that i punish myself so much more exquisitely that she ever could with her brutal, blunt flailing. i am the master of my own pain, able to lock myself up with indecision and pluck away at the scars and scabs and fears and wounds that live inside me.

god i hate the mind that i live in and i hate the drugs to treat it. either i am in pain au natural or i am on meds and a dull, unfeeling wretch with all the lovely side effects. which is worse? trade one cage for another and either way, i am never really happy.

sunday on the wheel

i truly hate sundays. it's like standing at the top of a hill, looking down to the valley below and knowing that you have to go but realizing that the trip to the bottom is going to involve thorns, cliffs and certainly some sort of animals and insects.

the amazing thing is that depression can take all the potential of a week in skew it directly towards negativity so that positive potential becomes negative and you look at what is the start of the week for growth and gain to most people but for you is the next leg of a broken glass strewn path that continues onward into the dark woods of you life.

Sure that's sounds a little melodramatic but for me, falling down again keeps hurting more and more.

Plus, I feel more than a little confused today. Not one of my better ones.
